Chinese Courses Introduction

Chinese postgraduate courses can be divided into primary, intermediate, advanced three stages. Each stage has corresponding basic courses in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and intermediate and advanced stages also have language and culture elective courses:
Primary Chinese
Teaching Levels: 
A, no Chinese at all, zero beginning students [A class].

B, learned phonetics, grasps about 200 words students [B class].
C, studied Chinese, master about 600 words students [C class].
Teaching aims:
A level student after finishing a school year’s study, can reach 1900-2100 words, learn the primary stage of Chinese grammar.
B level students after finishing a school years’ study, can reach 2200-2400 words, learn the primary stage of the Chinese grammar and learn the basic usage of words
C level’s students after finishing a school years’ study, can reach 2800-3000 words, learn the primary stage of the Chinese grammar and learn part of the intermediate stage’s grammar and words usage.
Teaching time:
The first semester is 17 weeks; the second semester is 17 weeks, with a total of 34 weeks for two semesters (a year). 24-26 class hours a week, with a total of 816-884 class hours.

English name:Elementary Comprehensive Chinese
Class hours: 340-408

Teaching object: this course’s teaching object is the beginner Chinese for foreign students.Course aim and requirements: Comprehensive Chinese (primary) is a comprehensive language skills training course, the backbone of the basic Chinese teaching. The purpose of thi
s course is to train the students' listening, speaking, reading, writing comprehensive skills in primary Chinese, and teach certain language knowledge, thus cultivating the students' Chinese communication skills. Through the study of this course, have the students grasp about 3000 words and grammar points based on the original foundation, and give students basic daily life, learning and a range of social communication activity ability and so they can meet the needs of the general language environment, with a preliminary understanding of the general situation of Chinese society.

2. Course name: Elementary Chinese Listening
Class hours: 204
Teaching object: this course’s teaching object is beginner Chinese for foreign students.
Course aim and requirements: This course is a single skill training course, mainly aimed at the learning reality in the primary stage, focused on training and improving the students' listening skills. From zero beginning, helping and training students to distinguish the sounds and tones, and training the students' ability to grasp the main points, guess ability, ability to understand the context and meaning .Through the above training, comprehensively training listening comprehension ability, in order to meet the practical need of communicative activities.
3. Course name:The reading and writing of Chinese characters
Class hours:136

Teaching object: this course’s teaching object is the beginner Chinese for foreign students.
Course aim and requirements: The teaching purpose of this course is to eliminate students' fear of Chinese characters, help the student master the basic strokes, component radical of Chinese characters, and the components and structure of Chinese characters, help students better memorize and write Chinese characters and correct reading Chinese characters. All in order to improve the students' reading ability.
4. Course name:Elementary Chinese Spoken
Class hours:136

Teaching object: this course’s teaching object is beginner Chinese for foreign students.
Course aim and requirements: This course is a single skill training course, with speaking as the basis, expression as the training purpose. It trains students to communicate following the regular pattern of Chinese oral speech communication, so as to use oral communicative language in communications.
Middle-class ChineseTeaching Levels: 
A, has already grasped about 2000 Chinese words [D class].
B, has already grasped about 3000 Chinese words [E class].

Teaching aims:
A level’s students after finishing a school years’ study, can reach 4500 words, learn the middle stage of the Chinese grammar and word usage.B level’s students after finishing a school years’ study, can reach about 6000 words, accomplished the middle stage of the Chinese grammar and word usage. They then learn part of the advanced stage grammar and word usage.
Teaching time:
      The first semester is 17 weeks, the second semester is 17 weeks, with a total of 34 weeks for two semesters (a year). 20-22 class hours a week, with a total of 680-748 class hours.

1. Course name: Intermediate Comprehensive Chinese
Class hours:272

Teaching object: This course’s teaching object is foreign students who have learned the basic grammar of modern Chinese and with a about 2500 words, Students must have finished the primary comprehensive Chinese courses or achieved a corresponding level.
Course aim and requirements, Intermediate Comprehensive Chinese is a comprehensive language skills training class, its teaching aim is to train student comprehensive skills, including: listening, speaking, reading and writing, and teach certain knowledge of language and cultural knowledge. By the studying of this course, have the students master about 2000 words and 120 language points, train the students' ability to read and listen by paragraphs. It provides ability to use words and sentences to express some content more fluently; both in oral or written form, and improve student ability to use Chinese in daily life, learning, working and communications.
Course name: Intermediate Chinese Listening and Spoken   English name: Intermediate Chinese Listening and Spoken Class hours:204   Teaching object:This course is suitable for the foreign students who have mastered 2500-3000 common words and basic grammar points.    Course aim and requirements: Intermediate Chinese Listening and Spoken is an integration of both verbal skills and verbal communication skills. Through the training the students can understand general conversation and work terms with normal speed, and make their communicative competence satisfy ordinary daily life, social communications and work needs within certain scope, and can express personal views, participate in conversations and argue. They can make more coherent, more organized conversations. .

3.Course name: Intermediate Reading
   Class hours:

   Teaching object:This course is suitable for foreign students who have mastered more than 2500 common words and basic grammar points.
Course aim and requirements: This course is a training class on reading skills, classroom teaching from the reading skill training to have students master newspaper language knowledge and reading skills, and thus to cultivate students' ability to read Chinese newspapers.
4.Course name: Modern Chinese Writing
   Class hours: 68
   Teaching object: This course is suitable for the foreign students who have mastered more than 2500 common words and basic grammar points.
   Course aim and requirements: This course is a written language practice lesson to train students' comprehensive usage about Chinese characters, vocabulary, grammar, writing format and punctuation. Through the classroom teaching to review, consolidate and practically apply learned Chinese characters, vocabulary and grammar points, and correct any mistakes; Through studying model essays, to enlarge their vocabulary and learn varied correct expressions and general rhetoric skills in different contexts; Learn the correct usage of Chinese punctuation, and grasp the Chinese writing format, thus cultivating and improving their Chinese written expression.
Advanced Chinese
Teaching Levels: 
    A, has already grasped about 3500 Chinese words [F class].
    B, has already grasped about 4500 Chinese words [G class].
   Teaching aims:
Students after finishing a school year of study can reach about 8000 words, learn the advanced stage’s Chinese words and rhetoric.
Teaching time:
The first semester is 17 weeks; the second semester is 17 weeks, with a total of 34 weeks for two semesters (a year). 20 class hours a week, with a total of 680 class hours.

   Class hours: 204
   Teaching object: This course is suitable for the foreign students who have mastered about 5000 common words and about 600 grammar points.
   Course aim and requirements: This course is the training class for comprehensive language skills with the purpose of training comprehensive skills for advanced listening, speaking, reading and writing. Through studying of the course, the students become fluent and can freely do oral expressions, with strong reading ability. They cause the target language for thinking freely, argue s and debate. They have also mastered grammar and grammatical rules, and have certain rhetoric knowledge.
2. Course name:News Listening
Class hours: 136
Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students who have mastered more than 2500 words.
 Course aim and requirements: This course is a listening skills training class, through the studying of this course, can help students master common words, common structure and the common sentence patterns of radio and television news, understand the structural characteristics of radio and television news, deepen their cognition and understanding of the Chinese society's reality. Overall it will effectively improve their listening comprehension ability for Chinese news, and improve the understanding level of listening to Chinese radio news and television news.
3. Course name:Advanced Chinese Reading and Writing
Class hours: 136
Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students who have mastered more than 2500 common words and common grammar points. Course aim and requirements: This course is an integration of both reading and writing skills training session, through this course to further strengthen students' language sense, continue to enlarge their vocabulary, improve their reading speed. It will enhance their whole grasp and understanding of the reading materials, as they master the basic knowledge and the basic skills of Chinese writing.
 
4. Course name:Advanced Chinese Spoken
Class hours: 136
Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students who have the intermediate level of spoken Chinese, and can communicate in Chinese correctly and appropriately in ordinary daily life, learning, and a certain range of social activities.
Course aim and requirements: This course trains student verbal ability to accord with the Chinese standard, so they can start to cope with the diversity of appropriate Chinese usage in the cultural context.
5. Course name:Survey of Ch
Class hours: 34
Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students who have more than the intermediate level of spoken Chinese. It requires the students to gain basic skills in Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing and general knowledge of Chinese culture.
Course aim and requirements: This course is a culture course, through classroom teaching to make a systematic introduction to China’s condition, so that students can not only have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of China, but also can have a significantly improve their reading and listening ability.
 
6. course name: Chinese Culture

Teaching Object:
The course is suitable for students with intermediate Chinese ability. This class requires the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as general knowledge of Chinese culture.
Course target and requirement:
The course is a series of cultural lectures,. It will help students fully understand Chinese culture and language as well as enhance the ability to understand ancient Chinese culture.
7. course name: Ancient Chinese
Course hours: 34
Teaching object: the course is suitable for students who have intermediate Chinese.
Course target and requirement: through the study of specific ancient classics, students master many ancient Chinese words and a dialect, which helps students enhance their understanding of ancient culture. Students gain the ability to read and translate simple ancient Chinese.
Elective Course
1. course name: Chinese Calligraphy
Course hours: 24
Teaching object: this course is suitable for students who have elementary knowledge of Chinese and students who have just begin to study Chinese.
Course target and requirement:
Through this course, students gain general knowledge of Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese characteristics. They master the way of using pens and the structural principles of Chinese characters. While learning Calligraphy, students also improve their ability to appreciate Calligraphy. Therefore they gain a better understanding of the spirit of Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese culture.

Teaching object:
The course is suitable for students who have basic knowledge of Chinese or students who have just begun to study Chinese.
Course target and requirement:
Through the practice of Tai chi, students gain a better understanding of the skills and characteristics of Tai chi. The mastery of one set of Tai chi could help students strengthen their body and improve their understanding of Chinese culture.

Teaching object:
The course is suitable for students who have completed basic Chinese courses.
Course target and requirement:
This course is set up to fulfill the need for business Chinese for overseas students. It aims to cultivate the ability for practical business communications as well as providing a general knowledge of Chinese business and foreign trade.

Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students who have foundation Chinese.
Course aim and requirements: This course is an elective course setup to help students smoothly pass the HSK exam, with primary and secondary sections. The curriculum fully explains the language knowledge required for the HSK examination, so as to help students quickly improve their ability to take the HSK examination.

Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students of all levels.
Course aim and requirements: This course is set up for training Chinese pronunciation through the training of the sound, rhyme, tone and intonation so as to help students master good pronunciation skills.

Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students of all levels.
Course aim and requirements: This course is for training Chinese communication skills through visual scene demonstrations like watching, listening and speaking. It provides communications ability for certain subjects and situations.

Teaching object: This course is suitable for foreign students above the middle level.
Course aim and requirements: This course helps students to master Chinese idioms, through the interpretation and practice of idiomatic phrases in daily life.

Course aim and requirements: This course improves students’ oral English through the subject setting, concentrates training of the words and expressions to activate dormant vocabulary, and effectively improves oral adaptability .

Introduction to the Chinese Training Program of the College of International Cooperative Education

The main duties of the College of International Cooperative Education are the organization and implementation of the Chinese teaching program for international students, students’ daily administration and department administration for international students and foreign faculties. Presently, the college has received the students from Japan, Korea, Great Britain, Canada, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Russia and other countries. The college has an experienced and well-organized faculty, and the ongoing communication on Chinese training leads to a mastery of teaching theory. With the teaching concept of openness and the student-centered teaching model, the college provides a delightful atmosphere. In the process of teaching, according to students’ difference in the mastery of mandarin and the various demands, students are distributed into 8 levels, A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H. Each is cohesive so the 8 level classes become a scientific system. The ongoing stress on communication ability and reading ability further enhance the mastery of mandarin.
Class A: is for students who haven’t studied mandarin or students who have studied spelling and few Chinese words but have no ability to express themselves clearly and fluently by words or complete sentences.
Class B: is for students who have learned the basic grammar of mandarin and have mastered main sentence structure and have the ability to express themselves in simple sentences and the ability to talk on simple topics.
Class C: is for students who have the ability to express themselves by paragraphs and the ability to paraphrase relatively long passages. The students are able to converse fluently in general.
Class D: is for students who have the ability to discuss general topics and could express themselves by paragraphs with good intonation and normal speaking speed. They also have the ability to select the appropriate words and to keep sentences coherent.
Class E: is for students who have the ability to fully and correctly understand the Chinese papers or magazines and have the ability to grasp the meaning of Chinese broadcasts and TV programs. They have the ability to use the language flexibly and can express themselves appropriately.
Class F: is for students who have the ability to correctly express the main idea with appropriate language. They also have the ability to flexibly use Chinese in every process of commercial activity.
Class G: is for students who have the ability to translate Chinese words into their native language with few mistakes or without mistakes.
Class H: is for students who have the ability to translate professional Chinese precisely without problems. They master the ancient Chinese grammar, words and other knowledge and they have the ability to read classical Chinese documents.
For the teaching schedule, long term study consists of 18 weeks, with one week for audition and one week for examination. After the completion of first term, students can enter the higher level class for further study. The schedule of each class is connected and each schedule can be adjusted according to the condition of each student.
